Trump broke through the GOPe cordon on the strength of one overpowering issue: immigration. He alone broke from the amnesty or amnesty-light party consensus.
Whereas it seems like the grassroots Dems basically just want the national party to do what it’s already doing but moreso. I struggle (or perhaps fear) to see what issue an insurgent D candidacy could ride to a similarly decisive effect.
An insurgent D candidacy would have to peel off MAGA voters. How? 1) Return to class-not-race populism and anti-war/anti-globalist civic nationalism. Basically, Matt Taibbi centrism without the religiosity. "The reasonable middle."
2) Key figures in MAGA would have to be found to be involved in sex trafficking.
According to a Yougov survey from september 14 more young people (18-29) believe the shooter is a relublican (29%) compared to those who think he is a democrat (16%)
Elites tend to be more thoughtful than their followers. Professional writers tend to reflect a little before writing or speaking. E.g., "Exulting over Charlie Kirk's murder could look bad. Now that I think about it, it is bad. So I won't let anybody know I did."
Lots of people have deplorable first impressions. The better ones keep theirs hidden.
Good analysis and article. In addition to elite liberals pretending their side doesn’t condone this when there are thousands of people who do, they are also downplaying the fact the shooter was a leftist. Did you see the platonic form of elite liberal Sam Harris say the shooter wasn’t a leftist because his family was Republican? So there’s both a pivot to less wokeness they are trying to pull off while they are simultaneously in denial of reality by trying to paint this violence as ambiguous. Not a good look and shows they aren’t honest and “rational” but just want power
People who write angry political screeds on BlueSky also aren't the democratic base. They are "yuccies", as you term them. These people are disproportionately involved as organizers, opinion-makers and activists. But the average Democratic voter is more moderate on immigration, policing, and gender. With both parties, the average voter is to the right of this highly-engaged class of politically active people. Trump conquered the Republican party by bypassing this group of people and breaking their influence. If a Democratic candidate did the same, the result would be a shift to the right.
My lefty associates are clinging to the idea that the shooter was a Groyper or some flavor of right-winger, and if not, well, ALL sides do assassinations!
But I'm glad the so-called Left is eating some shit. It will take them a while to come around, if they ever do. I can't imagine a righteous left-wing Trump figure now, but perhaps one will materialize in a decade or two.
