I agree populist sentiment has shifted toward anti-authority causes, particularly anti-tech. This is bad and benefits the left, as you note. Good piece.

Things have changed so much since 2023 and 2024 on flock cameras. I got a room of half shit lib Democrats (people who wear the shirt that says “y’all means all” with a rainbow blm flag) and half boomer conservatives to agree on flock cameras at a HOA meeting. It was overwhelming support from both sides. There was zero opposition back in 2023 and 2024.

This particular vibe shift is partially a consequence of RW discourse breaking out of containment; these “people” discovered online discourse within the last two years and mindlessly allude to Israel/Epstein/Big Tech to signal their perceived esoteric enlightenment to other overly impressionable retards

Otmar Milan's avatar

Also a consequence of Trump being a blatant shill for Israel and big tech.

The distrust over Big Tech makes sense after Google,Amazon andother big companies were instruments of censorship and the Woke hysteria for years

That they pretent to get along with Trump sometimes ,doesn't mean republican voters will easily forget, specially if they are white men who were looking for a job

This makes it tricky to support the Flock cameras AI tech and data centers in the short term, even if they could benefit ,i wouldn't trust them entirely tbh 🤭

well if it was up to me i would take the risk for the country but many people on the right are understandably suspicious, or go along with podcasters .that Trump supports these things is not enough since he is the president so all the blame goes to him, good or bad

Its just difficult to regain trust after all, higher ups in these companies dislike conservatives, podcasters and politicians like Josh Hawley have been talking against big tech for years ,its what influencers are interested at the moment ,

but i suppose that could change over the years , become a healthier environment, just will be difficult to convince voters Trump warning they will be poor or that china will beat the US is not enough

This is essentially what I have been saying: that a lot of people have grown mad at the Trump administration, or at least apathetic compared to 2024, on account of two things. First, I had the unpopular opinion that the now-vaunted 2024 coalition was always too broad, and Trump just promised too many things to too many people.

On top of that, a lot of Trump's flaws such as his, let's be honest, blatant corruption and his mocking and scolding of people who question him were always bound to make people take their ball home. Even if they don't vote Democrat, they won't vote GOP especially in midterms, which the GOP always struggled with without Trump on the ballot. And the Democrat base is motivated now, when they weren't in 2024 because of Gaza.

Add to this Trump's bad handling of the economy.

You were not at the forefront of saying any of these things. What ended the vibe shift is the deportations, which our whole side pretends upset people for not removing 100 million immediately. Trump's other problems, such as the Iran War, have only worsened the problem. His mockery of people hasn't played much of a role though

Dmitry's avatar

No, what ended the vibe shift was giving in to the pressure. If Trump did what he promised to do, ignored the yapping (no response rhetorical strategy), there would be much less outcry by the end. Most people only care when they perceive that caring matters. And Trump gave in and made that perception true.

Regardless, these are all half measures he has done. Now Democrats will reverse little thing that have been accomplished by inviting another 10 million illegals during another Bidenite term.

Otmar Milan's avatar

People were not that upset at the deportations at least, people who broke for him in 2024.

I admit I was a bit vague with the mockery point. It isn't just that; it's also his tone like if you're struggling, it's your fault, and his repeated insistence that the economy is great.

So many on the right insist that Biden and Kamala's "gaslighting" on the economy lost them 2024. But I would argue this is worse, because at least Kamala and Biden entertained the idea that there were problems at all and tried to say they were doing something about it.

What I mean by the corruption in conjunction with this: it rubs people the wrong way that Trump has roughly tripled his net worth in two years and then mocks and lies to struggling Americans. If you say that corruption doesn't matter, I have to ask why the online right cared so much about Hunter Biden's corruption making what, 100k at Burisma ?

The brocasters turned on Trump over the ICE raids in the spring of 2025. The raids have drawn the most vigorous protests from the public than anything else. The Iran War is very unpopular, but no one is marching against it. Compare that to the riots in Minneapolis and LA.

Dmitry's avatar

No one would care about riots if Trump did his job of framing them correctly (“we always have small minority of dangerous extremists”, etc) and just ignored the media bs completely. And yes, same leftists that marched against ICE also marched against Iran War. Now I wonder why Trump would become lenient on illegals (specifically, farm workers) but unyielding when it comes to Iran War.

Deportation was always going to be unpopular but it's necessary.

The only real way to stop immigration is for immigrants to be legitimately afraid that "getting here" isn't enough and they could be deported at any moment, so why bother trying.

Sometimes what's popular and what's right line up, but sometimes it doesn't. You have to spend political capital on things you just think are right for the country.

If we only did what the median voter says he wants in polls we'd have a 20% of GDP budget deficit every year and policy would veer wildly on any number of issues every few cycles.

Trump's real problem is that he cut Medicaid/ACA so he could cut the top marginal rate and his tariff plan had no obvious benefits for Americans but could easily lead to him being blamed for inflation. These are a lot more important to swing voters than illegals being arrested for breaking the law.

Trump also didn't follow through on Iran nor did JD Vance follow through on a bigger child tax credit.

Otmar Milan's avatar

If you look at polling immigration is seen as one of his best issues.

Scott Greer's avatar

It's one of his best issues because the public still (rightfully) thinks Democrats want open borders. If Trump had just done ICE raids, the midterms would look better but it still would've ended the vibe shift and the brocasters would be just as opposed to him. As I said, they all turned on him over this in spring 2025.

Otmar Milan's avatar

This is connected to my earlier point. The 2024 coalition was always too broad, and Trump simply promised too many things to too many people.

He shouldn't have promised those things if he couldn't deliver. That's a basic rule of political strategy you don't make commitments you can't keep, because voters remember.

Halftrolling's avatar

Its the Iran war. Nobody cares about any of this other shit. That massive dipshit die for israel blunder sunk him.

Marko's avatar

Completely agree. There was already a popular JQ awakening in the online sphere, as a result of Gaza; the Iran war pushed it into the mainstream. Now everybody's "questioning" and the Dems are trying their best to make the issue abstractly "Israel" as opposed to the people who have historically inhabited Israel - Dems are against blood and soil obvs.

Trump let his inner Boomercon come out and now his party will lose the midterms and much of his rightwing support. All because of Iran.

People want the trump of 2015

If you think RW twitter represents the majority of Americans, you could believe that. But it does not.

Bro. I got perm banned from twitter years ago. Instead of wasting my time with that shit I literally speak to the majority of americans in the time you waste combing your hair and ironing your shirts

Dems are going very hard on BILLIONAIRES and finding sympathy with the "I can't afford my 20 dollar burrito because of boomers" crowd who are supposedly right-wing/conservative because they make jew jokes online.

Otmar Milan's avatar

Scott, you want evidence for the vibe shift? The Odyssey has made like a billion dollars. Everyone on Twitter hated it, seeing it as at best cringe Hollywood slop, and some seeing it as anti-White trans propaganda.

Scott Greer's avatar

That's a different matter that's more uncomfortable for the Online Right. The Trump admin didn't care about the Odyssey but the Online Right fixated on it.

Along with Fishback's poor performance, Massie's loss, and Vivek's possible win, The Odyssey's performance would demonstrate X has much less influence over American life than people think.

Otmar Milan's avatar

I would argue that is worse because people on X are more ideologically right-wing and will show deference on the kitchen table issues that, as you yourself have admitted, Trump isn't doing well on.

So tell me: if Trump doesn't have the economy to appeal to normies, and culture war issues he has done good on don't matter in real elections what does he have?

This is a question for the entire administration, because if all he has is rural old people they would vote red no matter what. Why did we need Trump specifically for that?
