My non American take is that conservative politicians try to claim MLK in some way because over 90% of Americans see him as a national hero so it's the safe thing to use his "spirit" for your own ends than to reject him. Attacking him before the tapes come out (which will be excused by the media) would probably not help from an optics standpoint.
The pragmatist in me gets your point and it's not wise for politicians to speak frankly about MLK. But, as a humble CONSERVATIVE podcaster, it's right for us to push back against the MLK cult. A lot of American figures we can appropriate for our cause. MLK is not one of them
