The American public did not want Obamacare. Republicans were proven 100% correct that it would cause premiums, copays, and deductibles to skyrocket while Obamacare subsidies would unsustainably increase spending. Obama ignored the public and forced it through. It still stands to this day. Trump needs to force through the deportations with the money from the BBB, or he will alienate the base that is still waiting for a major transcendent policy action from the Trump era outside of the federal judicial appointments.

"On the day the Affordable Care Act (ACA), often called Obamacare, was passed (March 23, 2010), public opinion was sharply divided along partisan lines, with a plurality of Americans disapproving of the law."

And in this case, Americans will discover increasing benefits from deportations rather than detriments. If the admin can push through the downturn in public opinion and continue their deportation agenda, by the end of Trump's term, Americans are likely to see lower crime, more affordable housing, less strain on public services, and maybe even less congested roadways. They may not connect that the dots that these are due to mass deportations, but it will still leave them with a good feeling re: Trump.

You are completely wrong. Trump shapes public opinion. He doesn’t merely cater to it. He just needs to make the case.

In addition, many people will support certain policies for the broader country but if they feel it negatively affects their own life they will reverse their position. For example seeing a waiter they're friendly with at a local diner they frequent arrested by ICE

One issue that perhaps doesn’t fully come through here is that the Trump administration is intentionally trying to terrorize the illegal population in an attempt to get them to self deport.

That is, admin intentionally taking aggressive, emotionally impactful actions that try to generate feelings of fear and anxiety amongst the illegal population. Alligator Alcatraz, militarized raids, etc.

Well if you do that, it turns out the broader public has an emotional reaction too and feels like the administration is being too harsh.

Not clear they have thought this all through.

At the reported $100bn ICE funding price tag, they could pay 2mm people $50k each to be resettled elsewhere, and simply say we don’t have the resources to keep them here and there is no other way to effectively comply with the law and have a responsible immigration policy, etc. Might be a better strategy.

Europe has been trying to pay migrants to leave and they still won't take the money. Terror seems to be working to dissuade illegal migrants from coming. We'll see if it encourages a large level of self-deportations
