This was good and could be extended into a book. Having grown up in North Texas, this was the culture: light, positive, and rather bland—what else would you expect from people who mostly live indoors? Even topography reinforces this. It’s hot and featureless.

And yes, it’s conservative, but mostly RINO conservative. Culture is not a priority. Suburban sprawl continues forever.

I think the infusion of immigrant communities is our main source of distinctiveness. Mainly Latino, but now we have several Asian enclaves. They will try mightily to resist sunbelt-ification, but by the second or third generation, they’re all talking, thinking, and acting the same way. In some ways this is good, but in other ways it’s a little sad.

I wish there was a greater concern for bigger ideas and cultivating a distinct sense of identity and history, but if it comes at the cost and becoming stupid Marxists, I’ll take Sunbeltism every time.

When I first got into politics, this was basically my hope for America. Broadly patriotic and not woke. Now that I’ve learned a lot, I think there will come a time where Sunbeltism will have to defend itself against woke. Some resentful weirdos will ultimately try to complain that it’s patriarchal or white supremacist
