One simple reason is that the stadiums are in major metropolitan areas and you can't exclusively rely on out of towners so that's going to entail at least a partially leftist fanbase. It's always been popular with diversity. The extent to which sports was a right wing phenomenon is grossly overstated. This stems a great deal from the importance of local sports in traditionally right leaning areas and has little to do with national sports. When there was more racial consciousness, whites were willing to openly support white athletes over non whites, especially in non team sports.
I think the MBAs in charge and female execs were always salivating at the untapped customer base (women, gays, etc) at the expense of their existing customer base (men).
