I feel like this all has come to head relatively recently, probably after the murder of Charlie Kirk. Not only was he the great unifier, bringing together different wings of the Right, but Kirk avoided Snooki-behavior and proved to be a pretty good role model. I doubt Candace, Tucker, Megyn Kelly, or some of these others would go off the rails like the did if Charlie were around.
And, like you say, this is all just business. The Left has its patrons or they are independently wealthy like Piker. Those on the Right have to hustle and channel their inner Snooki to make a name for themselves. It'd be nice for some rich guys to fund some smart charismatic people and let them set the standard for discourse about policy. Just a thought.

Isn't everyone who presumes to speak for millions, or wants to be famous, a Snooki though? The late, great Z-man called them "carnies". This includes Rush and Bill O'Reilly and Bill Buckley. Rush and the Bills were more civilized for sure, but they were carnies, just for more civilized men. The people you mention - Hasan and Candace - are carnies for a less civilized time, but also primarily for people who are under 35, the people who are the most swayed by carnies.

Most people never escape a high school mindset. The more they see about politics online the more it is processed through that lens. Marginal tax rate discussions? Boring! They want drama and gossip. These people were never politcal before, and aren't really now either, but are spending time saturated in social media politics anyway.

It's not the best analogy on Scott's part, owing to the fact that IQ signaling is off the charts with the schizoid brocasters. Nobody cared about what you knew or how smart you were back in the day. Snooki and Paris Hilton knew enough to know that wasn't really their world. Now people that stupid (or more) are interested in intellectual things, which is seriously cringe. It was once said that politics was hollywood for ugly people. There's certainly a lot of drama and infighting over shit that doesn't matter, but people aren't actually willing to put their dukes up, and nobody's partying or having a good time. It's reality TV without the deals (although some of them are quite rich) partying or pussy, at least for the most part. These people just yell at their screens, pretend Trump's actually woke, that islam and diversity is great, argue about theology and various other types of nerd shit and really have no actual lives to speak of. All of this while complaining about degeneracy, no less. To compare it to reality tv is insulting...to the reality tv stars...who were way more fun.
It's a little silly for Greer to be invoking O'Reily and Buckley as he laments the lack of the high brow aesthetics he pines for.

For Bill O's part, his stock and trade was titillating soft porn lit and then the whole phone gate. He's certainly right about the overlap with the needless drama, and making money being more important than anything else. But in a way, Trump himself proves that the reality TV model, absent someone being a complete loony out of touch with the real world, actually works. Trump is as much of a reality TV star than any of these influencers, more in fact and he did have a real world impact and has effected meaningful change. A lot of this anti Trump fervor from the influencer sphere is (as per Scott's point about petty infighting) nothing but jealously against Trump. Each one of them thinks they can replace him, somehow. Good luck with that. Crassness is good. It allows you to penetrate the BS of our over offended falsely polite society and expose the lies (racial egalitarianism, the benefits of unlimited immigration) and throw them back in societies face. If Trump cared about decorum or not being Trashy, we wouldn't be where we are and we'd be a lot browner with a much shittier economy. Greer understands that the influencers are a problem but he completely misses why. They aren't a problem because they're attention seeking or because they want to make money or because they're crass, they're a problem because they're wrong. Trump is right and it has nothing to do with 'cleaning up your act' or observing social mores. Doing that is what caused the mess we're in in the first place.
Candace Owens isn't a problem because she has no class, she's a problem because she lies about Trump and his record of accomplishments because stupid idiots who can't do basic research think Trump has abandoned them because they don't have a flying car and gas isn't 11 cents a gallon. And she's black. Greer is overthinking this and trying to shoehorn in a point about the larger culture where it doesn't belong. We need more crass reality tv stars who do shit for white people and don't care what anyone thinks. And if that turns people off, then how is Scott different from anyone else? If it's just about pleasing people (we move away from crass reality tv right wing populism into something else because their tastes have changed) how is that different from what the podcasters are doing?
