I think the real issue is that if Mr. Miu would have been a black African immigrant instead of a white Romanian immigrant this case would have had different media coverage and an entirely different outcome in court. The prosecutors arguable overcharged Miu with first degree murder but a black African would have likely been charged with lesser offenses if at all and if the case went to court there would have been a higher probability of an acquittal since the white teens would have been depicted as racists regardless of the facts.
It's obvious Scott has an axe to grind with Gen Xers. Apparently 35-40 comments in his his Twitter feed from people Scott assumes to be Gen Xers in support of Miu is enough for Scott to effectively psychoanalyze the entirety of American Gen X and preach to them about their shortcomings which every generation has including his beloved Millennial generation.
I've tried to be objective about this incident. There have been conflicting reports about how it started but it seems Miu did not communicate very well with the drunk teenagers and explain why he was rummaging around so close to them in the water which prompted some hazing and harassment from the teens. I know what's it's like to be 18-20yrs old and my friends and I would probably would have had some smart aleck comments for a 50 something guy getting too close and doing the same thing.
However, in Miu's defense I don't think he has ever been arrested or has any history of violence so he must have felt threatened by the groups's actions towards him although it looks like he overreacted and went a little bit too far. Again, it's a tough call because so many people writing about this case have taken one side or the other.
Nobody knows anything about the political orientation of either Mr. Miu or the teenagers so it's idiotic to base one's opinion on assumptions about either generation. No doubt there were at least several wicked Gen Xers on the jury who voted to convict Miu.
