Only minor disagreement on reconstruction, think that Lincoln would have been offended by the illegality of the radical republicans in a lot of the post civil war legislation. Would have had a similar attitude to Johnson, but w much more moral stature and thus power to challenge Stevens et al

Great supplemental material! Unfortunately, my IQ might have taken a slight hit, but as you mentioned in the podcast, most of us, including myself, only had superficial knowledge about Lincoln, mostly derived from memes.

I found that set of books... THEY ARE THICK!

While Lincoln was not keyed, I’ve always felt that had he stayed in office we’d be much better off. He had much more lax standards for the post-war south which would have allowed them into the union without having the reconstruction amendments (other than #13) shoved down their throats. Without 14A most of the terrible court rulings of the following century and a half couldn’t have happened. I believe this was part of JWB’s motivations, he thought the south would have to keep fighting if the alternative was the radical republicans.

I’ve heard that Northern European immigrant groups had low murder rates due to the social institution of fisticuffs. In places like Italy, or even the Deep South, people dealt with their quarrels through gun duels, knife fights, and fencing duels. Obviously much more deadly then just giving someone a walloping

Hey Mr. Greer, have you ever considered making an episode on the Democratic-Republicans and the Federalists? It does seem to be somewhat of a debate among the right. I’ve even seen some people criticize Washington over it. I’m personally more on the side of Hamilton and the Federalists, I think Jefferson was somewhat of a radical and while the DR’s did have some good ideas like expansion of territory, the state they wanted to create would have been dysfunctional. I think the popularity of that god-awful pozzed Hamilton broadway play has turned much of the right away from Hamilton, even though he was essentially more right-wing than T.J.
