Another great highly respected episode Scott, I just wanted to throw in a little piece of Katrina revisionism if it's something worth revisting, especially when comparing it to the response of present day hurricane Helene. First my only memory of Katrina was when I was 4 and I was hugging my dad goodbye as he left with his toolbag to join volunteers to rebuild churches and houses for weeks. Much of what I'd learn from Katrina would be from college as I had some classes in Disaster Management, Homeland Sec, Etc. I'm going to say an unpopular opinion that, despite Bush's incompetent presidency, the federal response for Katrina was handled marginally better than what we see today. I'm not a fan of FEMA, but for what it was at the time it did x100 better than the local government. Keep in mind FEMA and DHS as a whole was completely restructured by the Homeland Sec Act (2002) and the fact it was able to pour in so many resources and people, it was almost overkill. The reason why there were so many deaths was because of the comically corrupt and incompetent black and dem local government. So many things to mitigate the disaster were ignored: Warnings from the Army Corps Of Engineers for years that the leeves and pumps were old and insufficient, desperate pleas for resources and structure for local EMS were ignored, and non existent communication abilities. The response was pretty overwhelming, you had every three letter alphabet agency there to help and the full purse of the federal government, hell even active duty troops and Mexican marines showed up. A lot of problems during the response phase would be exasperated but some stories had their merit. One of my professors, a former high speed SWAT guy with a ton of experience under his belt and never waviers when it comes to backing the blue, even if it feels like he's turning a blind eye. Even he had enough. The local sheriffs were insanely cruel and incompetent for him to not speak up about it. There's a lot more to talk about this but, I'll TL;DR. The federal response to this disaster and the Biden admin's overall to others in the past is insanely incompetent compared to Katrina. Will this be the final wake up call for normies come election time that nobody has been at the wheel during Biden's entire Presidency and the facade the media runs for Kamala is finally unraveling that she shares responsibility and isn't some blank slate?
